Taking Care of Your Older Horse

If you have ever owned a horse or regularly ride one, you have come to realize what wonderful animals they are. Horses are smart and have an amazing memory. Once they know you and trust you, they will be loyal for life. There are many stories of how horses have saved their owner’s lives.

Owning such a horse gives years of fun and companionship. For this reason, when they age it is important to continue this relationship by looking after your senior horse.

Just as we humans notice temperature changes more as we age, it is important to be sensitive to the conditions that your horse is in at this stage of their lives. They aren’t able to do as well with extreme temperature changes. It’s always a good idea to keep a blanket handy in the colder days especially if you live in a higher elevation or where there are cold seasons. In the same way be sure to provide at least one or two shady spots where your horse can escape from the direct sun.

Unless there is a medical reason it is good for your horse to stay active. Although he might not be working, exercise is essential to keep limber, make use of their lungs and other body parts as well as having the joy of experiencing the world around them. Turning him out will also keep the weight gain low and his spirits high.

As your horse ages, his body will go through various changes. This includes his stomach and digestive system. It is essential to feed your horse in with these changes in mind. There are several great supplements in the market that make up for deficiencies in nutrient absorption of senior horses. A favorite is TAHITIAN NONI® Equine EssentialsTM. One of the things that it does is promotes proper feed digestion and nutrient absorption. Another great feature is it supports the equine immune system with superior antioxidant activity.

Have you ever noticed that many senior horses stress easier? My favorite feature of TAHITIAN NONI® Equine EssentialsTM is that it contains adaptogens to help relieve stress. They are much calmer and relaxed. TAHITIAN NONI® Equine Essentials FlexTM was formulated with horses who suffer from joint problems. It supports joint function but also includes MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate as well as the Omega 3 and 6 oils found in the TAHITIAN NONI® Equine EssentialsTM. It has given many a horse a new lease on life. In Australia its trade name is Tahitian Noni™ Equine Formula™  .

Horses can have happy and healthy lives into their 30’s and 40’s if given the proper care, love and support.

Oral health has a cumulative effect on general health

New Orleans is a great city. There’s a lot to smile about here except maybe for the smiles themselves.

Men’s Health Magazine has just named New Orleans one of the country’s seven ‘Cavity Capitals.’ The magazine gave seven city’s a grade of ‘F’ for dental health and New Orleans is one of them.

Dr. Henry Gremillion, Dean of LSU’s School of Dentistry, says it’s a serious problem.

This article is shared by cosmetic dentistry in Springfield and Joplin Missouri.

“Quality oral health is a significant part of quality overall health, and with that is a cumulative effect on general health,” he says.

“There’s quite a bit of evidence that gum disease, or periodontal disease, has a distinct relationship with cardiovascular disease down the road,” says Gremillion.

“There’s also a definitive relationship between gum disease, diabetes, low birthrate babies and stroke,” he says.

The magazine looked at things like flossing, use of oral hygiene products, visits to the dentist and the percentage of folks who’ve had teeth extracted.

“But ultimately, it relates to the amount of decay occurring in the population here in New Orleans as compared to a number of cities around the United States.”

And, apparently, it’s one area where New Orleans is in a state of decay.

In other words, the city flunked its oral exam.

Men’s health looked at community water fluoridation, the percentage of people who saw a dentist in the past year as well as the percentage who’ve had teeth extracted.

Research also provided the percentage of households using dental floss, the money spent on oral hygiene products, and the number of dentist offices per capita.

St. Louis is the town with the worst teeth, the most dentally challenged in the land.

Dog Heart Murmur Symptoms and Cures

What is a canine heart murmur? It is a cardiac problem which relates to abnormal movement in the dog’s blood flow. If you listen closely to your dog’s heartbeat, you can actually hear it. Instead of short, quick beats, it will sound like an extended and soft thudding. Dog heart murmur symptoms include a general weakening, sluggishness, difficulty in breathing, a bluish mouth and tongue, and in some cases fainting even in minimal activity.

When you see your dog showing the symptoms of heart murmurs, visit your pet’s doctor immediately. They have to take more thorough diagnostic tests like x-rays and echodiagrams to confirm the cardiac condition of the animal so there will be no risk in giving incorrect and potentially dangerous medication.

Heart murmurs can be caused by inherent heart defects, anemia, high blood pressure and other related cardiac problems. The murmurs fade through the years so special and preventive heart treatments are more often than not, overlooked by unknowing pet owners. Now we have more information, we are better prepared to handle this condition as successfully as possible. Listed below are some dog heart murmur cures you can share with somebody who might need to know.

Treatment of this ailment is often reliant on the animal’s age and health condition. Take your dog for a check-up to see the precise nature of the disorder. If the murmur is benign, all you may required to do is to build up a proper food plan that will counteract the deficiencies in its system. A low sodium diet, rich in nutrients like Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A and Coenzyme Q10 have had remarkable results in improving canine’s cardiovascular health as shown by tests and survey results conducted by experts.

Medications like Enalapril, Lasix or Benazepril work to lower blood pressure and strengthen heart contractions as needed. Crateagus oxycantha or, as it is more commonly known, Hawthorne is a special herbal tonic that promote the artery health of the dog. Arnica montana, Kalium phosphate, and Calcium fluoride also aid in the improvement of the animal’s blood pressure. Ensure you consult your veterinarian for his expert opinion on these elements and how it may possibly affect your dog’s condition.

Other

However, if your pet has been diagnosed with a more critical condition, surgery may be the only solution to repair its cardic disorder as advised by your vet. Usually, these procedures are done for the older dogs and cats who have damaged valves in their hearts.

Do not make light of animal cardiovascular disorders; or assume that it is something that will disappear eventually. If left without attention, it is probable that your dog will ultimately get and expire of a heart failure. Do what you can to avoid this at all costs. Have regular check-ups and while they are young, already feed them with good food and give them proper exercise. A happy pet will leave you with no regrets and a chest full of pleasant memories that will always stay with you.
